Municipal Water and Sewer

The District of Muskoka provides water and sewer services are in several of the larger towns, including Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Huntsville, Port Carling, Bala, Mactier and Baysville.  Connection to municipal services is mandatory where they are available.  For more information see the District of Muskoka water and sewer website

Waste and Recycling

The District of Muskoka provides curbside waste and blue bin (recycling) collection throughout Muskoka.  Green bin (compost) collection is available to the urban areas of Bracebridge, Gravenhurst and Huntsville, and most recently, has been expanded to the urban areas of Port Sydney/Utterson, Port Carling, Bala, MacTier, Port Severn and Honey Harbour.  The District also operates a number of landfill and transfer stations where residents can take excess waste.  Waste and Recycling calendars for 2013-14 have been prepared for each municipality: Town of Bracebridge, Township of Georgian Bay, Town of Gravenhurst, Town of Huntsville, Township of Lake of Bays, Township of Muskoka Lakes

Emergency Services

Police services are provided by the Ontario Provincial Police through detachments in Huntsville, Bracebridge and Midland.  Each area municipality has its own fire department: Town of Bracebridge, Township of Georgian BayTown of Gravenhurst, Town of Huntsville, Township of Lake of Bays, Township of Muskoka Lakes

Schools and Universities

Muskoka is served by the Trillium Lakelands District School Board (which also includes the City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County) (Map of Board schools).  15 public schools are available through Muskoka and high schools are located in Huntsville, Bracebridge and Gravenhurst.  French immersion is available in Huntsville and Bracebridge.

Catholic students are served by the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board with schools in Honey Harbour, Bracebridge and Huntsville and a high school in Bracebridge (map of schools).

There are two post-secondary campuses within Muskoka, both located in Bracebridge.  Nippissing University maintains a Muskoka Campus with degree programs available in Liberal Arts, Arts and Culture and Child and Family Studies.   The Georgian College Muskoka Campus has a variety of available programs including business fundamentals, bookkeeping, carpentry techniques, hospitality skills, office administration, personal support worker, and pre-health sciences.  Within commuting distance of Muskoka, Lakehead University and Georgian College operate campuses in Orillia, while Laurentian University has a campus in Barrie.

Hospitals and Health Care

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare provides emergency health care services and inpatient care at hospitals in Huntsville and Bracebridge, as well as outpatient services in both hospitals and the Almaguin Highlands Health Centre in Burk's Falls.  Many Muskoka residents also use the Orillia Soldier's Memorial Hospital in Orillia and the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie.  The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit also provides services to the public with local offices in Gravenhurst and Huntsville.

Energy

The electricity supplier for majority of the Muskoka area is Hydro One.  For a map of ongoing power outages, visit the Hydro One Stormcentre.  Within the urban areas of Bracebridge and Huntsville, the electricity supplier is Lakeland Power Distribution Ltd.  (Outages)  In Gravenhurst, electricity is supplied by Veridian Connections.


Home heating oil is available from Bowman Fuels (PetroCanada) and Huntsville Fuels (Shell).  Union Gas is the local supplier of natural gas services (note that natural gas is only available within the urban areas of Bracebridge, Huntsville, Port Sydney and Gravenhurst.)  Propane is available from Moore Propane, Superior Propane, and Budget Propane.

Radio and Television


Cable television is available in Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville through Cogeco Cable.  Satellite television service is available in most areas (depending on satellite visibility) through Bell Satellite and Shaw Direct.  Over-the-air television is limited to CTV, Global and CBC rebroadcasters and CTV-Two in Barrie.   Local newscasts that include the Muskoka area are available on CTV-Two Barrie and MCTV (North Bay/Sudbury).

Moose FM operates local radio stations in Huntsville (105.5) and Bracebridge (99.5).  CBC Radio One broadcasts from Huntsville on 94.3 with CBC Radio Two available on 106.9.
